The Moving Home Checklist
Moving into a new home? You’ll need to inform your friends, family and co-workers so they don’t worry about you. But that’s not all: there are also government agencies, financial institutions and other service providers who need to know where to reach you after the move. In this article we provide an easy-to-follow checklist of people and organizations that need to be informed about your change of address.
At around 6 weeks out.
Arrange for time off work
Arrange for time off work. In order to avoid any complications, you should start arranging your days off at least eight weeks before the move date so that your company knows when they can expect to be without you and can fill in your position while you are gone if necessary. You may also need a few extra days after moving day as well because of all the unpacking, sorting, cleaning up and putting things away.
Confirming you move date
You will need to get a confirmation of your move date as soon as possible to avoid any potential problems, such as lack of removal companies and arrange with all parties to agree the same date, especially if your whole chain is moving on the same day.
Make arrangements for child care or Pet Care
Arranging for childcare or pet care ahead of your move is very important. You will need to arrange for a temporary carer or boarding kennel and make sure you have lined up someone who can look after your children or pets on the day of your move. the whole removals process will be much more efficient and stress free and the removals company can carry out your move without the worry of injury or an accident.
Arranging alternative accommodation
On some moves especially if it is a large house, your removal company may carry out a packing service for you. this normally intel’s coming to your house the day before the actual move date.
It can be beneficial for you to stay with relatives or find alternative accommodation for the night so the removal firm can pack and organise everything ready for the big day. And save you the stress of trying to live for the night with boxes everywhere.
At around 4 weeks out.
This is probably one of the most important times.
Start contacting utility suppliers
Gas, Water, Electric, internet, phone to let them know the new address. utility suppliers
TV License authorities if you need their services in future on a different property than before.
Contact your insurance company and make sure everything is up to date – it’s always best to do things like this early anyway! home insurance, car insurance.
Notify DVLA in order to change your licence.
Benefit or HMRC departments, you do not want to loose money.
Health professionals, Your Doctor or optician etc.
All of your financial suppliers such as credit card companies, banks, loans providers.
At around 3 weeks out.
Confirming you move date

Start getting removal quotes
you don’t want to find out that all your removal companies are fully booked at the last minute.
Start packing up the items that you don’t want to take
Try to dispose of all items you do not require. There’s no point in paying good money to move things you are going to dispose of anyway.
Start using up your food and pantry items, its smart to use up your fridge and freezer content before your move.
Around 1 week
Plan to take all recycles and rubbish out in time. Do not leave tons of waste as you may get billed by new owners to dispose of it.
Start clean your old home in preparation of the move day. If you are hiring a cleaning service from your removal company make sure there is a complete understanding of what you expect and dates and times.
Plan the parking situation with your removal company. Some areas may require permits or special permission to park your removal truck prior to your move.
The Day Before
A week before moving day: Get an early night’s sleep!!! This last step should go without saying but make sure that you’re getting enough rest because once the big day arrives its going to get busy.
